Urinary Tract Infection

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection affecting the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. Common symptoms include frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, cloudy or bloody urine, and pelvic pain. UTIs can be treated with antibiotics and plenty of fluids.

Types Of Urinary Tract Infection

Bladder Infection (Cystitis)

Affects the bladder and is the most common type of UTI.

Urethra Infection (Urethritis)

Affects the urethra, commonly caused by sexually transmitted infections.

Kidney Infection (Pyelonephritis)

Affects the kidneys and is a more serious form of UTI that can lead to complications if untreated.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

Frequent Urination

Feeling the need to urinate more often than usual.

Cloudy or Bloody Urine

Urine may appear cloudy, bloody, or have a strong odor.

Burning Sensation

Experiencing a burning sensation or pain during urination.

Pelvic Pain

Discomfort or pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvic area.

Causes of Urinary Tract Infection

Bacterial Infection

The most common cause of UTIs, bacteria from the bowel or skin enter the urinary tract and multiply, leading to infection.

Incomplete Emptying of the Bladder

Inadequate emptying of the bladder can allow bacteria to thrive and cause infection

Sexual Activity

Sexual intercourse can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, increasing the risk of UTIs, especially in women.

Use of Catheters:

Insertion of urinary catheters can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, leading to infection, particularly in hospitalized patients or those with urinary retention issues
